Green feed A note from Ian Littleton of Clarendon Farms - Egg Yolk Colour The yellow to orange colour of the egg yolk is derived from the pigments contained in the feedstuffs consumed by the hen. Green feed such as pasture grasses or lucernes and grains such as maize and durum wheat are good sources of the pigments that colour egg yolks. Other feed ingredients such as sorghum and some vegetable protein meals provide a limited yolk colouring effect. Hens that are free ranging can also take in extra pigments from the insects that they eat.The colour of the egg yolk is not always a good indicator of the nutritional quality of the egg. An egg has to have the correct balance of energy protein vitamins and minerals to sustain the growth of the chick embryo. If the hen can not access feed ingredients to provide that correct balance then she will produce less eggs or stop egg production. The larger breeder flocks maintained by the mainstream egg and poultry meat industry consume well balanced diets designed to produce lots of healthy and big baby chickens for their layer and broiler farms. But those breeder diets are wheat and sorghum based and the egg yolks are very pale.Clarendon Farms attempts to maintain a consistent strong egg yolk colour. The layer diet we use contains maize and lucernes in different combinations depending on availability. The feed ingredients are grown on other organic farms. Our hens range at low stocking rates over large pasture areas. However variations in egg yolk colour do occur. The pasture quality in a paddock can vary due to rainfall or how close the hens are rotated off that paddock to a new range. The age of the hens in a flock can have an impact. Young hens starting egg production can have a paler yolk colour.No antibiotics drugs hormones artificial fertilizers pesticides synthetic of chemical feed additives have been used in the production of these eggs. Sound regeneration farming practices are used and the hens are never confined.The Hens are housed in small portable houses that are towed over the pasture. This helps protect the flock against disease avoiding the use of antibiotics and drugs. They are never confined in the houses. They are protected against predators by flock guardian dogs and electric fencing. The large outdoor feeders contain grains grown on other organic farms. more
