Our Fresh Produce Report

This report was updated on Wednesday 21st October for deliveries 26th - 29th October 2020

Orders for delivery Monday - Thursday

Order by no later than 3pm Sunday

Some specialty items like Bread & Dairy have specific order cut off times. Please check these out when placing your order.

Thank you all so much for bearing with us over the last few months as we chopped and changed the way we have been delivering to you as we worked around the Corona Virus and the strangeness that it brought for all of us.

We are now back to picking up all boxes (including cardboard) as well as all packaging material on a weekly basis...

....BUT if we cannot safely separate returning boxes from orders we are yet to deliver in our vehicles .....our priority will be picking up poly boxes (please put all packaging material in your poly)....so if we take your poly and not your cardboard - please recycle the cardboard at your end that week.

Returned boxes and packaging material are being cleaned, stored and re-used in due course. Please let me assure everyone that we are taking the cleaning and storing process very seriously at our end to protect our own family (including staff) and yours (our extended Lettuce family).

We are all still well....none of our family (including staff) have come into direct contact with any person carrying the virus and we are following strict procedures at our end to limit the chance that our team are exposed to the virus.

Our warehouse is still not open to the public at all and Couriers delivering stock to us are not coming inside our warehouse. We are following all of the guidelines provided to us by the World Health Organisation aswell as our Government to reduce any potential exposure to COVID-19.

Take care everyone,

Emma for Ben Slade and Cheryl & Bob Stuart

Please take note:

  • No additions of changes to orders will be accepted after 3pm each Sunday.
  • Sensible Substitution will be made at our end if items are short or not available unless you advise otherwise.
  • Favourite orders (for recurring order customers) will be placed as early as Thursday. If you change your order after we have placed it on your behalf please send a new order to us (before the cut off) - we will know which one we have placed and delete it.

  • As you can all imagine this time of the year our packing of apples literally takes us twice the amount of time as we carefully roll each piece to inspect for breakdown and even then the fruit can deteriorate on their way to your place. Being stored in cool rooms with a constant temperature for so long, can on change of temperature send fruit literally droopy, wrinkly and/or rotten before your eyes. As many veterans of Lettuce know, this time of year always prompts a note from us regarding 'fresh apples' and lack of them....the reality is that we are sending you out 'old fruit'. There is a window of time apples are ready to be picked...they are taken off the trees and then stored in cool rooms until the kitty is empty. Obviously as time moves on, these apples become 'older'. We are very conscious of the quality of the goodies we supply you, every fresh item is handled by 2 staff members upon packing who are checking for any quality issues...so rest assured it is not in our interest to send out produce that we know you would not be happy with as we offer a 'quality guarantee'. ....but warm weather and end of season fruits can present unexpected problems that can literally happen over a few hours. We are very transparent about the quality of our produce and welcome your feedback - both good and bad....Our pick in the apples is still Pink Lady from Graeme, Gala from Smith in Tassie and Grannies from McMahon. Remember that all Winter fruits need to be stored in the fridge (Navel Oranges, Grapefruit & Lemons - especially Juicing). As a result of the increasingly limited variety in fruit the seasonal boxes will seem a little heavy in the veg department (with good reason) until the Summer fruits really begin....Know what to expect. Remember Pink Ladies bruise really easily so late in the season! These bruises are more often than not simply skin deep, so you may think about peeling for your little ones at least....New apple season will begin again in Jan/ Feb.
  • ...the good news is that it won't be long before our fruit bowls are overflowing again....early Nectarines starting extra early this week from Mancinelli - don't stock up everyone - first pick is always a little hard : ) ....Can I suggest Small Seedless Watermelon  - they have been great as have been the new season Mangoes from NT, New season Valencia Oranges from Fat Goose Fruits, Rhubarb, Paw Paw,  Blueberries from 15 Acre Farm and Driscolls and Bananas from QLD. There is talk about early Cherries being available  as soon as the 2nd week in November, early Apricots in 2 -3 weeks and early Nectarines from Lester in VIC within the month....hang in there - Summer fruit season is just around the corner.....this really is the hardest time of the year for all of us eating Organic  Fruit !
  • Our QLD Strawberry availability from Pim is now on borrowed time....As veterans of Lettuce know, the curtain will come down on Pim's season with the heavy rains or fruit fly  that always wipe out the crop sometime in October/November. As we move to the end of the season the berries are a little smaller and a lot more seedy....know what to expect. Before we know it we will have Fred Rowdosky's Summer Strawberries back on the list!
  • If you gave Flat Parsley away over the last few weeks  due to the thickened stalks and lack of leaf (end of season)....it's time to welcome  Parsley back to your menu....new season is upon is....bunches are soft and abundant with leaf. Locally grown Coriander is also now superb and in good supply this week - On Grower Special - only $2.80 per bunch.
  • Brassica prices have just gone through the roof. QLD season is pretty much over and the season from the Southern States is only just trickling in....this results in high demand and limited supply which pushes prices high.....Sizes (especially on Cauliflower) and price will improve over the next few weeks as supply increases. Please keep in mind that Summer Cauli's are usually quite a few shades from white and certainly not as pretty as the Cauli's we have been supplying you during Winter from Master Cauliflower Grower - Harm.
  • I'm sure you will all have noticed our lettuce are now on the larger side....as Veterans of lettuce know we are on agreed prices with our local growers for the whole year....so we take the big with the small so to speak....We have endured the small during winter and will now welcome the bigger. Remember we do not strip our lettuces back....we could, it would certainly make them prettier....but then inner leaves become outer leaves and essentially you end up with less edible leaves.
  • Charlie's Asian Veg - Bok Cho, Pak Choy & Choy Sum have been fantastic...and the Kale patches are busting at the seams again - Green Curly on Grower Special again - only $3.20 per bunch this week.
  • Zucchini, Beans, Shallots, Salad Mix from Pim, Dutch Carrots (although very small), Onions - White in particular (best for salads), Celery (although a little spindly), Cherry Tomatoes - Round & Grape in particular, Lebanese Cucumber & Asparagus, Italian Garlic, Mushrooms (all varieties), Pumpkin - both Jap and Butternut and Silverbeet were great this week.
  • Christmas break 2020 - Last deliveries for 2020 will be made week starting Monday the 21st of December. First deliveries in 2021 will be made week starting Monday the 11th of January.
  • Please return our boxes, icepacks and plastic boxes containing soft fruits and veges! These can be used over and over again if treated with care. We also welcome the return of all other packaging material that may find it's way into your order, egg cartons, bubble wrap, lettuce, strawberry and cherry tomato punnets aswell as spinach boxes, etc. I know many are sceptical about the recycling of goods through local councils....but please be assured we deliver all of the packaging material we use (when the end of their life is upon us) into Sydney Markets where recycling is a big business.....Please leave all these goodies in your returning boxes out for our drivers to collect on your next delivery. If our drivers are not picking up your boxes please lettuce know.

  • Did you know we have Recipe Packages, also simply known as Meal Inspiration for those of us preparing dinner for the fam each evening...Head to our Meal Inspiration Page to find this week's selection of Recipe inspirations. We know you all have things in your pantry like Olive Oil so with our packages you can simply add the package to your cart and then delete any goodies you don't require. So simple !

We have updated our website with the most up to date and accurate information available to us at this time, but due to many factors including that most of the produce is yet to be picked there is of course some uncertainty with our expected supply. The good news is that we have quite a few supply options available to us and so we may list a Grower on our site that does not end up supplying us goodies this week. Rest assured we only deal in Certified Organic, Australian Grown Fruit and Veges - so any replacements we may supply to you from other Aussie Growers will also be grown in line with the National Organic Standard. You don't have to take our word for it... Lettuce Deliver is also a Certified Organic Retailer (NASAA Retailer R9291) which means that we have to be able to prove any claims we make about a products organic status at a moment's notice : )

MILK

...in many cases the Milk we offer you needs to be pre-ordered at our end a week in advance. Most of the time our guess- timates are spot on...but we have been caught out on the odd occasion. We do have a number of Dairy options available to us and so if we run short  on some varieties, we may look to others to fill the gap. If you would like us to supply ONLY the milk you have ordered or nothing at all, please make a note with your order.

CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS

As you know, we charge your credit card for your delivery total on the day of or day after your delivery. Please ensure that we have your up to date credit card details and that there are sufficient funds available on the day of your delivery for us to process your payment.
