THE DROUGHT

A poem by Richard Statham

It is Spring but the sad thing is that it's dry, so so dry.
Oh my....the months go by with ne'er a cloud in the sky.
The ground is bare, one must stare to see even a blade of grass.
Chooks are desperate with nothing green to be seen.....or eaten.
But we're not beaten.  The rain will  come...... all in good time.
This is a promised land, and the dust and sand will again
Bring forth new life with abundance,  once the season changes.
The ranges  in the Nangar park are so sparse when it's dry.
Not even a small waterhole in a dried up creek bed.
Wildlife will die, they can't be fed.
Such amazing contrast.  Drought is rotten but soon forgotten.
The landscape changes so fast when the drought is past.

In the garden the ground is hard indeed.
Stunted clover, marshmallow and  capeweed going to seed.
They  crunch underfoot like corn flakes,
In places, even where  we've watered, for God's sakes.

It's far worse way out west.....they're really distressed.
No income for two years or more.
No stock- feed in store,
No money in the bank to buy more.
No crop in the ground
No credit can be found
No business plan is seen to be sound.

For many a family farm, will this be the end?
Or as usual after drought, will they be on the mend?
The challenge is to re-sow pasture and crop
And find the funds  with which to restock.

Rural communities depend on farming.
Anxiety,  stress and suicide rates are most  alarming.
The youth of our communities seek better opportunities
In overcrowded cities, in urban areas.
The jobs might be various but city life is also very precarious.

No, the solution for drought is not urban drift.
Knuckle down and give each other a lift.
Today 40 mm is forecast for next weekend!!
Will God almighty soon the rains send?

  • It's so easy to forget that those families who farm the land to feed us are still facing the fight of their lives from the worst drought in living memory and the early and overwhelming fire season being experienced across our sunburnt country. Richard has put to paper the remarkable spirit of our Aussie Farmers - their love of our promised land, their optimistic look towards next season and their remarkable empathy for others - with the view that there is always someone else who is worse off than they are...We really do breed them tough Down Under...The families who are working our land have the most  amazing spirit that shines so brightly. Thank you Richard for allowing us to share your touching words with our community.....You may know the Stratham family better by their Farm name - Rosnay! Many of us enjoy their outstanding Olive Oil on a daily basis, or their delicious Kalamata Olives, Olive Paste or Dried Figs....and if you haven't tried them do yourself a favour. Perfect Xmas gift for the Home Cook.
  • For those of you who are in a position to help financially....there is a fundraiser for Organic Farmers in NSW including Marrook Farm Dairy that has been launched by The Organic Investment Co-operative to bring fodder from Victoria to NSW to feed hungry cattle. Donate here https://chuffed.org/project/organic-farmers-bushfire-appeal
  • For those of you who are not in a position to help financially... Please share this appeal widely.
  • ...only 2 more deliveries before the Christmas Break ! As with each Christmas/New Year we will be taking a short break. Last deliveries will be made Monday the 16th - Thursday the 19th. First deliveries of 2020 will be made week starting Monday the 6th of January. Treat yourself to Bowan Island FRUIT MINCE Tarts - they are so good and never around long enough!
  • There was a lot of talk about this Summer fruit season and how it was looking like a good one....and those predictions are coming to fruition. Mangoes, Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, Strawberries, Blueberries, Cherries, Seedless Watermelon, Hass Avocadoes....all fantastic and in a amazingly good supply under the harsh conditions our farmers have been facing. Don't wait - fruit is fantastic. Blueberries our produce special this week! So so so good!
  • We are really getting to the bottom of the barrel with our Apple supply....and this week we have discarded more Fuji's than we have been able to use....so that's it for them this season. This time of the year our packing of apples literally takes us twice the amount of time as we carefully roll each piece to inspect for breakdown and even then the fruit can deteriorate on their way to your place. Being stored in cool rooms with a constant temperature for so long, can on change of temperature send fruit literally droopy, wrinkly and/or rotten before your eyes. Remember to refrigerate asap at your end.  New apple season will begin again in January/February from McMahon in Pozieres, QLD.
  • Generally speaking our veges have also been amazing. Stand outs this week include - Cauliflower (although on the small side and a few shades from white), Sugar Snap and Snow Peas, Onions - all varieties, Lebanese Cucumber, Pumpkin - Jap in particular, Red Capsicum, Rocket PP, Baby Spinach PP,  Asparagus, Herbs - Flat Parsley in particular, Leeks & Tomatoes (try thinly sliced with Buffalo Mozzarella, olive oil, basil leaves, salt and pepper - quick, easy and delicious salad!)

  • Did you know we have Recipe Packages, also simply known as Meal Inspiration for those of us preparing dinner for the fam each evening...Head to our Meal Inspiration Page to find this week's selection of Recipe inspirations. We know you all have things in your pantry like Olive Oil so with our packages you can simply add the package to your cart and then delete any goodies you don't require. So simple !
  • Please return our boxes, icepacks and plastic boxes containing soft fruits and veges! These can be used over and over again if treated with care. We also welcome the return of all other packaging material that may find it's way into your order, egg cartons, bubble wrap, lettuce and spinach boxes, etc. I know many are sceptical about the recycling of goods through local councils....but please be assured we deliver all of the packaging material we use (when the end of their life is upon us) into Sydney Markets where recycling is a big business.....Please leave all these goodies in your returning boxes out for our drivers to collect on your next delivery.

We have updated our website with the most up to date and accurate information available to us at this time, but due to many factors including that most of the produce is yet to be picked there is of course some uncertainty with our expected supply. The good news is that we have quite a few supply options available to us and so we may list a Grower on our site that does not end up supplying us goodies this week. Rest assured we only deal in Certified Organic, Australian Grown Fruit and Veges - so any replacements we may supply to you from other Aussie Growers will also be grown in line with the National Organic Standard. You don't have to take our word for it... Lettuce Deliver is also a Certified Organic Retailer (NASAA Retailer R9291) which means that we have to be able to prove any claims we make about a products organic status at a moment's notice : )

Our first deliveries of 2020 will be 6th - 9th January

THANK YOU

Thank you all so much for support regarding our listing on NSW Food Authorities site for being in breach of a food act. If you have been blissfully oblivious to the drama, you can come up to speed here... or just sail on by and come on in to order our Aussie grown, All Certified Organic Fruit & Veges : )

MILK

...in many cases the Milk we offer you needs to be pre-ordered at our end a week in advance. Most of the time our guess- timates are spot on...but we have been caught out on the odd occasion. We do have a number of Dairy options available to us and so if we run short  on some varieties, we may look to others to fill the gap. If you would like us to supply ONLY the milk you have ordered or nothing at all, please make a note with your order.

CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS

As you know, we charge your credit card for your delivery total on the day of or day after your delivery. Please ensure that we have your up to date credit card details and that there are sufficient funds available on the day of your delivery for us to process your payment.
